Students will develop their reading comprehension skills by reviewing the pros and cons of artificial intelligence, specifically regarding a new AI neuron network known as DALL-E. This middle school reading comprehension on AI is the perfect way to introduce an ever changing world to your students.
 
DALL-E is an OpenAI used to generate images from natural language. Joanne Jing, product manager of DALL-E, compares it to showing a student flash cards. If DALL-E sees pictures with the caption "kitten," it learns what various types of kittens look like. Do the same thing with the word moon, then ask it to create digital art of a cat on the moon, and DALL-E will create a logical interpretation. Spark interest in your classroom with this high-interest topic.
 
Students will learn about the risks of using this technology on a large scale and participate in a descriptive writing guessing activity. This cross-curricular resource includes a descriptive sentence-guessing activity. Students will have to guess what sentences I used to create AI art. They'll then create descriptive sentences, choose a class favourite and submit them to me so I can run them through DALL-E. I'll send over the finished product!
